As anyone who has read my journals will know I latterly started to take Cheryl to her work each morning. Then after I had a bit of a turn and landed in hospital I Cheryl's Dad was told I must slow down and do a bit less in my work each day. So I decided I would also pick Cheryl up at Lunchtime 1.30. So my routine was very regular. After a few weeks we would pass a really dirty and ragged man each morning, Cheryl watched him and would say " Dad I wonder where he goes and where he stays". So one morning as we approached the man Cheryl said "Dad stop a minute" I wasnt sure what was coming. Anyhow she approached the man spoke awhile and then gave him a card. She told him who she was and that she could help him, the card was given to him with a telephone number to call whenever he felt ready... After a few weeks Cheryl said "Dad remember that poor man ? we got a call from him today" To cut a long story short the man was given a small flat along with a starter of food and a visit once each week. Often Cheryl would come out in the morning and have two carrier bags with her, I would say "a big lunch today Chez. No Dad just a few blankets I dont use...The Simon girls were always doing things like that. We hope the man now and then remembers the young girl who stopped as it upset her seeing how ragged and dirty he looked. That was Cheryl McDonald, that was what she loved to do. And along with the other lovely girls Sandra and Yvonne in the Airdrie Simon Community Office they did make such a difference...Cheryl had found such happiness working with those lovely people..The time of my hospital stay saw Cheryl and Mum visit me every night, a memory that will never leave me of those visits was our wee lassie taking my hand and saying 'Dad please dont try and do so much'. So Cheryl was worried for my health !! and then,a few weks later our lovely girl was rushed to that same hospital and after what seemed like a lifetime three days later her life was over, no words or goodbyes she was gone so suddenly our hearts were broken in a million pieces. The journey I always did with Cheryl in the morning still has to be taken a few times each week for work. I could not tell you all what passing that spot does to me every single time, I see her so vividly standing giving me a smile and a wave as I left. I look at the seat next to me and try to picture her beside me, Please God, help me to bear the sadness of those times..DAD
